US, Russian Warships in Near Miss in East China Sea

By    |   Friday, 07 June 2019 09:06 AM EDT

The U.S. Navy has accused a Russian warship of unsafe and unprofessional actions after it came within 100 feet (30 meters) of an American guided-missile cruiser in the Philippine Sea.

The U.S. 7th Fleet says the maneuver by the Russian Udaloy-class destroyer on Friday put the safety of the USS Chancellorsville and its crew at risk.

“This unsafe action forced Chancellorsville to execute all engines back full and to maneuver to avoid collision,” the Navy’s 7th Fleet said.

Russia's Pacific Fleet accused the U.S. ship of causing the incident, claiming it engaged in dangerous maneuvering, Russian news agencies reported.

The Russian Navy said the Chancellorsville, a guided-missile cruiser, had come within just 50 meters of the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov, which had been forced to take emergency action to avoid a collision.
