Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton on Tuesday tweeted support for people who work at the White House after a Sports Illustrated story included a line that Trump once called the Executive Mansion "a real dump."
The quote appears in a story on Trump's relationship with golf. He owns multiple courses and spent much of his free time in the early days of his presidency neither at the White House nor Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, which he also has had unkind words for.
Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, was host not only to Trump's free time, he also used it to interview potential Cabinet nominees during his transition.
"Chatting with some members before a recent round of golf, he explained his frequent appearances: 'That White House is a real dump,'" the article quoted Trump, whom the story describes as "at his most unguarded among the people who pay for their proximity to him."
When NBC News' Peter Alexander posted a screengrab of the quote, criticism, including from Clinton, rolled in.
