Christopher Steele, the former British spy who compiled the now-infamous dossier on then-candidate Donald Trump and his connections to Russia, says in a new book he believes that 70 percent to 90 percent of the information he was given is true, The Guardian reports.

"I've been dealing with this country for thirty years. Why would I invent this stuff?" Steele says in the book, "Collusion: How Russia Helped Donald Trump Win" by Guardian journalist Luke Harding.

Harding, considered one of Britain's top Russia experts, talked to friends of Steele who said he has told them he believes his reports eventually will be vindicated as special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation continues.

The dossier has come under attack from Trump and his supporters, but was treated seriously in Washington circles as Steele was compiling it because of the former MI6 agent's reputation of making reliable reports on Russia, the book says.

Steele had, after all, put together upward of 100 reports on Russia and Ukraine between 2014 and 2016 alone as part of his private company Orbis. Steele founded the company in 2009 with his former colleague Christopher Burrows, and used the skills and contacts he had in his career as a spy to do investigations for private clients.

He was hired by Washington-based Fusion GPS during the 2016 election to look into any contacts between Trump and his team and Russians. Fusion had been hired by D.C. law firm Perkins Coie, which had initially been contracted by conservative website The Washington Free Beacon during the primary season.

When the Free Beacon stopped paying for the research, other Perkins Coie clients, the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, took over.

Some of the more salacious sexual stories have been disputed by Trump as have allegations he or his campaign colluded with Russia to influence the election in his favor. The Guardian story did not say what parts of the dossier Steele thinks might end up not being proved true.
