Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, a Republican and the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Hillary Clinton's speech about the Supreme Court is a tactic to swing the conversation away from her ongoing email scandal — about which he's certain the FBI will question her.
A
Washington Post report published Sunday gave more details about the email fiasco, which centered on Clinton using a private email address and server for work purposes when she was secretary of state under President Barack Obama. The Post report said 147 FBI agents are investigating the matter, and interviews with Clinton and her aides could happen soon.
Grassley, however, said Clinton's Supreme Court-themed speech on Monday — which is expected to put the pressure on him and other Republicans to hold hearings for President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee
Merrick Garland — is designed to be a diversion.
"This is simply a blatant attempt by Secretary Clinton to politicize the Supreme Court and to change the conversation after a damaging story about her in The Washington Post," Grassley said,
reports The Hill.
In an interview with
Politico, Grassley added, "With all the troubles she's getting on email, and the FBI's going to question her, I would imagine she'd want to change the tone of her campaign."
Under Grassley's guidance, the Senate Judiciary Committee has come under fire by Democrats for refusing to hold hearings for Garland. Obama nominated him to replace conservative
Justice Antonin Scalia, who died suddenly in February.
Republicans were unhappy with Obama for nominating someone during an election year and would like the next president to choose a potential replacement.
