Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. is working to recruit Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., to make a bid for the Arizona Senate seat held by Republican Martha McSally, The Hill is reporting.
The seat was long held by John McCain. McSally was appointed in December to serve the remainder of his term.
Schumer and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairwoman Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., met with Gallego Wednesday night in hopes of pushing him into the race,
“It went great,” Gallego said of the meeting. “I’m strongly considering it. I’m basically making the final decision and we’ll have that in the next couple weeks,” he added.
Meanwhile 314 Action, a group backing candidates with scientific backgrounds, is trying to convince former astronaut Mark Kelly to run for the seat.
Kelly is married to former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz.
