The CIA and U.S. special operations forces have begun a separate operation to hunt down and kill Islamic State terrorists in Syria that would use armed drones, U.S. officials said.

This is separate from existing efforts to destroy ISIS, The Washington Post reports.

The CIA, through its powerful Counterterrorism Center, and the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command are behind the clandestine operation — focusing on what military officials said are "high value targets."

"These people are being identified and targeted through a separate effort," a senior U.S. official told the Post. The official referred to Junaid Hussain, the British militant, and others killed in recent strikes.

The decision to enlist the agencies reflects rising angst among U.S. counterterrorism officials about the threat posed by the Islamic State, along with the current inability to beat back the group with conventional airstrikes, the Post reports.
