The national approval rating for how President Donald Trump is handling special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into his campaign is now matching an all-time low, but Mueller's approval rating on the probe has also fallen, a new CNN poll shows.

The new poll, conducted by SSRS, puts the president's approval rating for the Mueller investigation at 29 percent, matching a low hit this past June.

Meanwhile, Mueller's rating is down in the poll, with 43 percent approving of how he is handling the investigation and 49 percent disapproving, compared to 48 percent to 36 percent in early October.

By the numbers:

  • Mueller's numbers dropped mainly among independents, by 10 points to 36 percent.

  • 71 percent of Democrats approve Mueller's handling.

  • 21 percent of Republicans approve of Mueller.

With Trump, the approval ratings dropped among his own party as well as independents:

  • Republicans, 51 percent approve, down by one point.

  • Independents, 26 percent.

  • Democrats, 15 percent.

Overall 54 percent said they believe most of what Trump has said about the probe is false, while over a third say most of what he says are mostly true, numbers that have not changed much since August.

In addition:

  • 59 percent said the investigation is serious, compared to 35 percent who say it's an effort to discredit the president.

  • Half think the investigation will implicate Trump, with 78 percent of Republicans agreeing and about a quarter of Republicans.

  • 44 percent say Trump was unethical in considering Russian investments during his campaign, and 26 percent said it was not wiase.

  • The president's overall approval rating for handling the presidency remained at 39 percent, with 52 percent disapproving, and his favorable rating was steady at 40 percent to 55 percent unfavorable.

  • Trump's rating on the economy dropped to 49 percent, from 53 percent in early November.

The poll was conducted last Thursday through Sunday from a sample of 1015 adults, and held a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 points.
