Republican Sen. John Cornyn criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for making the debate about border security a partisanship issue in order to attack President Donald Trump.

Speaking to host John Catsimatidis on his Sunday radio show “The Cats Roundtable,” broadcast on AM 970 in New York, Cornyn said border security “used to be something that was not particularly partisan. But now, because of the politics of the Trump era where Ms. Pelosi wants to deny the president any wins on any issue, it’s been harder for us to work through these [issues].”

The Texas senator said the debate is not over a wall, stressing that the impasse “reflects some of the worst of Washington, because this really has not been about border security. This hasn’t really been about the money. It’s been about Ms. Pelosi wanting to make a political point, and to deny the President something that he would consider to be a win."

He added that “The only question is - is this going to be something that both Ms. Pelosi and the President can essentially agree to where both get a win?”

Cornyn emphasized that “we don’t need to shut the government down again,” which only hurts innocent people.

Cornyn added that the issue needs to be addressed, because “there is a security problem and we do need to have the technology and the people, and yes, even the barriers at locations to help control the flow of drugs and people across the border.”

He said he is more optimistic today than he has been about a deal, insisting that cooler heads are prevailing and that something will be worked out in the conference committee between the House and Senate.
