Two people were killed and one injured in a shooting Thursday morning outside an Illinois courthouse.
Kankakee, Illinois Mayor Christopher Curtis told The Associated Press that multiple suspects in the shooting had been taken into custody. His office also said the area has been secured and there is no longer a threat to the public.
"There has been a shooting at the Kankakee County Courthouse. The scene is secured. More information will be available as it becomes available. We are asking everyone to avoid the area as the investigation continues," the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office said on its Facebook page.
Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey said the shooting is believed to be a "targeted incident."
The incident took place south of the Kankakee County Courthouse,near the jail. No officers were injured and the police did not fire any shots.
ABC7Chicago reports that two suspects were in custody. One suspect surrendered to an officer at the courthouse and a second was apprehended a short time later by a sheriff’s deputy.
The shooting victims were both Hispanic men in their 20s. A third person was wounded during the shooting and was in surgery at a local hospital according to police.
Kankakee has a population of roughly 26,000 people and is located about 60 miles south of Chicago.
