The Black Lives Matter movement is inspiring and celebrating the killings of police officers, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said Wednesday in an interview with the liberal website ThinkProgress.

"If you look at the Black Lives Matter movement, one of the most disturbing things is more than one of their protests have embraced rabid rhetoric, rabid anti-police language, literally suggesting and embracing and celebrating the murder of police officers," Cruz told a ThinkProgress reporter in Kolna, Iowa. "That is disgraceful."

Cruz also mentioned the "vilification of law enforcement" by the Obama administration, including Deputy Darren Goforth, who was shot to death putting gas in his patrol car in Houston, Texas

Black Lives Matter's DeRay McKesson called Cruz's words "desperate."

"Cruz aims to perpetuate lies about a movement focused on ending violence in order to garner attention," McKesson wrote in an email to ThinkProgress. "This desperate statement is another reminder that he is unfit to be the President of the United States."

"We came out our houses because we were tired of seeing police officers hurt, harm and murder black bodies with impunity. Not because we want to see any police officer killed," Johnetta "Netta" Elzie, another leader of the movement, said.
