The divisive and intolerant remarks directed at pro-life, pro-gun, traditional marriage supporters by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo have given Republicans a boost and jeopardized Cuomo’s political career, the New York Post reports.
The newspaper Monday called Cuomo’s
"jaw dropping" comments — that New Yorkers with those views have no place in the state – “a major game-changing blunder.”

In a public radio interview in Albany on Jan. 17, the governor opined that the GOP is fractured as a result of an identity crisis between moderates and "extremists" within the party.
"Are they these extreme conservatives, who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay, is that who they are?" he asked. "Because if that is who they are, and if they are the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York. Because that is not who New Yorkers are."
"This is definitely going to help our candidates for governor, for Congress, for the state Senate and for the Assembly,"’ national GOP strategist John McLaughlin told the Post. "I’ve never before seen a governor anywhere in the country say to a large segment of his state’s population that they’re not wanted because of their ideology and their views."
Cuomo’s opinions have insulted Roman Catholics, evangelical Protestants and Orthodox Jews, according to the Post, adding that the religious groups’ furor has led them into "a de facto alliance" with gun-rights activists already furious over Cuomo’s Safe Act, which was passed in 2013 and is considered one of the toughest gun control laws in the country.
Writing about Cuomo's comments in the Los Angeles Times last week, columnist Jonah Goldberg observed that the governor and liberals like him are "
staggeringly and myopically intolerant."
"It's an interesting — and repugnant — tautology: Extremists hold extreme views, and we can identify extreme views by the fact they are held by extremists," he wrote.
"Opposing same-sex marriage — the mainstream Democratic position not long ago — is now anti-gay. Being in favor of gun rights is pro-assault weapon.
"Most vexing, and revealing, however, is that Cuomo doesn't even bother to wrap opposition to abortion in scary adjectives," Goldberg continued. "Simply believing in a right to life is extremist, and such extremists have no place in New York state. Given that Cuomo is the scion of one of the most famously Catholic families in America, this is a pretty remarkable statement. Will Cuomo provide buses for pro-life Catholics, or will he simply require them to self-deport?"
Cuomo's remarks drew an invitation to New Yorkers from Republican Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal to relocate to his state.
"Hey displaced and persecuted New Yorkers . . . You can find refuge, loving people and great food in Louisiana," Jindal tweeted last week.
Cuomo’s remarks illustrate the
hypocrisy within the Democratic Party, according to The National Review’s Kathryn Jean Lopez.
"This is an outrageous intolerance from a governor looking toward his political future in the Democratic party, securing his good graces with the abortion industry who his party – and all too many politicians – are content to serve," Lopez wrote. "This is the same intolerance and culture-war-waging that Catholics who oppose abortion and assisted suicide, and who support traditional marriage, are accused of."
