Darrell Issa Endorses Rubio's Presidential Campaign

Fox News' "Fox and Friends"

Rep. Darrell Issa on Monday endorsed Marco Rubio's bid for the presidency, telling Fox News' "Fox and Friends" that the Florida senator has "been fighting for a lot of things I believe in."

"He saved us money on Obamacare where others have wanted to repeal it," the California Republican said. "[He's] already saved $2.5 billion by eliminating an unreasonable backstop by the taxpayers for a failed program...and look, he's not afraid to engage on the hottest subjects. That's important because the next president will have to fix a lot of things, including our foreign policy."

Issa and Rubio, though, don't agree on the bulk collection of metadata, which the National Security Agency has officially ended, but Issa said he thinks the compromise measure that has been reached will work, even though Rubio has his doubts.

"The senator is on the Select Intelligence Committee," said Issa. "He's going to have to look at it day by day. I'm willing to be wrong on this but the act as we amended it has monitoring, so if we need to do something different, obviously, Congress will."

Issa also spoke about last week's shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic, saying he does not believe there was any connection between GOP rhetoric and the shootings.

"This is a gentleman that had all of the history that I would say adds up to mental illness," said Issa of the shooting suspect, Robert Dear. "You know, he told his neighbor about how he had to put a metal roof on to keep the government from spying on you. He was clearly paranoid. He had some run-ins with the law previously. He was crying out, quite frankly, for treatment of his mental illness."

And Dear shouldn't have been able to have weapons, said Issa.

"This is a good example where we should be talking about the mentally ill and keeping guns out of their hands, something Republicans and Democrats, I believe, can agree on," said Issa. "This is something Sen. Rubio would be more than willing to help champion, the fact that as much as we're pro-Second Amendment, we have to realize clearly some people don't have the capacity."
