David Axelrod slammed Hillary Clinton over her "unhealthy" need for privacy, saying it's more of a problem than her recent pneumonia diagnosis.

Donald Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway quickly picked up on the tweet and complimented Axelrod, who served as the chief strategist for President Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

Axelrod fired back.

Clinton received news of her diagnosis on Friday, but didn't disclose it to the public until Sunday, when she appeared ill at a 9/11 memorial service in New York an left early. Her campaign claimed she was simply "overheated" and "feeling much better" afterwards, but later that day they revealed her pneumonia.

Her communications director Jennifer Palmieri acknowledged Sunday's problems, saying they "could have done better," but also argued that Trump has been even less transparent.

Trump questioned Clinton's health during an appearance on "Fox & Friends" Monday.

"I hope she gets well soon. I don't know what's going on," he said. "Like you, I see what I see...Something's going on but I just hope she gets well and gets back on the trail and we'll be seeing her at the debate."
