David Ignatius: Clinton Foundation Accepting Foreign Donations Is 'Just Wrong'

Washington Post columnist David Ignatius slammed Democrat Hillary Clinton for continuing to let her family foundation accept foreign donations, saying "it's just wrong" on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," reports Mediaite.

"You have a series of mainstream media outlets and outlets that are left that are making the same suggestion, that the Clintons should step away from their foundation," said host Joe Scarborough. "What's your read on it? Do you think they should?"

Ignatius, who was a foreign correspondent in the 1980s and was the Post's foreign editor from 1990-92, responded that "it's a steady drip, drip, drip of these stories that call into question her honesty and reliability."

"On this question of the Clinton Foundation," he said, "The New York Times is absolutely right. It's outrageous to have someone running for president of the United States have her husband raising money from foreign governments, from wealthy foreign individuals who want to influence the United States."

In an editorial Tuesday, the Times called on the Clinton Foundation to stop accepting gifts from "foreign and corporate entities," and for all Clinton family members to step down from their roles in the organization.

"A wiser course would be to ban contributions from foreign and corporate entities now," the Times opined. "If Mrs. Clinton wins, Bill and Chelsea Clinton should both end their operational involvement in the foundation and its affiliates for the duration of her presidency, relinquishing any control over spending, hiring and board appointments."

Ignatius concurred.

"It's just wrong," he told Scarborough. "And I think anybody can feel that. I don't understand for the life of me why, when she said she won't do this as president — just stop it now. Not because it's good politics — because it's the right thing to do."
