Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said Friday she believes a bipartisan solution to the border security situation could have enough support to survive a presidential veto.
A group of Republicans and Democrats from both chambers of Congress is working together to write a Homeland Security spending bill for the year that would include money for border security. President Donald Trump said he'll only sign it if it includes money for a border barrier, something Democrats have pushed back on.
"At this point, one of the things I'm really glad to see is that House and Senate Democrats and Republicans are really working together in a bipartisan basis on the appropriations committee. That's what they do. I have confidence in them," Stabenow said.
"They will come up with something that is smart and makes sense. And then I think it's Mitch McConnell's job to make sure we have a vote on that."
Stabenow then insisted that the bill — which must be written, passed, and signed by a Feb. 15 deadline in order to stave off another potential government shutdown — could even have enough to support to override a presidential veto. Both houses of Congress need at least a two-thirds vote to accomplish that.
"I believe that we will have enough votes probably to overturn a veto if the president decided he was going to veto it," she said. "I think there's strong bipartisan support for doing the right thing to keep us safe, which is different than what the president's talking about."
