Former Vice President Joe Biden leads the 2020 Democratic presidential primary race, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., not far behind, a new poll showed Thursday.
The NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey, found Biden draws the support of 26% of voters nationally who plan to vote in 2020 Democratic nominating contests. Warren trails him at 19%.
Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., each get 13% of support, according to the poll. South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg rounds out the top 5 contenders at 7%.
Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke and entrepreneur Andrew Yang both garner 2% of support, and no other candidate in the field of about two dozen draws more than 1%.
Biden performs best among African Americans, older Democrats, and those who are moderate or conservative in their political views, while Warren runs strongest with self-described liberals and those ages 18-49, according to the survey.
Sanders also performs best among the youngest Democratic primary voters.
Only 12% of all Democratic primary voters said their mind is definitely made up.
"Every result looks so meaningful, so significant. And in truth, it is only July 2019," Democratic pollster Peter Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff, told NBC News.
"They are looking at lots of candidates," McInturff said of these voters. "And they don't need to make a choice right now."
The July 7-9 poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
