Democrats on Monday released a memo part celebrating, part mocking House Speaker Paul Ryan for his "out-of-touch priorities and failed leadership" in the first 200 days of President Donald Trump.
The Democrats three-page takedown of the Wisconsin Republican, titled "House Republicans' 200 Day Agenda Goes Down in Spectacular Failure," says Ryan is "increasingly unpopular nationally and within his own party, and is unfit to lead his unruly caucus."
"After 100 days of unified control of Washington, there were already early signs of Speaker Ryan's out-of-touch priorities and failed leadership," the memo reads. "At the time, the Speaker argued repeatedly that a 200-day evaluation was more appropriate. He got his extra time, and after even a cursory assessment, there's no doubt that Paul Ryan has achieved almost nothing since January 20th."
The Democrats highlight Ryan's - and congressional Republicans' - failures thus far:
- No healthcare bill.
- No infrastructure bill.
- No budgets.
- No debt ceiling deal.
The Democrats even mock Ryan for not following through on a Republican promise that liberals abhor.
"Nothing excites Paul Ryan more than cutting taxes for the wealthiest individuals and largest corporations and calling it reform (well, maybe slashing Social Security and Medicare). Given his many promises over the years and natural fervor towards overhauling the tax code, you'd expect him to have made some progress. You'd be wrong," the memo reads.
Dubbing Ryan the "Speaker in Name only," the Democrats said the Republican majority in the House is "imperiled" but in typical fashion, fail to offer solutions or plans on how they aim to reverse that majority.
All they have is 14 references and variations of the word "fail" in casting stones at Ryan.
"Paul Ryan did not lead House Republicans into the majority, but he could certainly be the one to lose it. If that happens, he will have no one to blame but himself," the memo concludes.
