Democrats and Republicans alike think people from the opposing party are destroying the country and are ignorant, spiteful, and evil, according to a new Axios poll showing the country's divisiveness.
The poll, which aired Sunday night on HBO, revealed that 61 percent of Democrats think Republicans are "racist/bigoted/sexist," while 31 percent of Republicans think Democrats are that way, reports Axios.
Further, a third of all Americans said they'd be disappointed if a family member married someone of a different party:
- 50 percent of liberal Democrats said they'd be at least somewhat bothered
- 32 percent of conservative Republicans said they'd at least be somewhat bothered
- More moderate Democrats and Republicans agreed by about 20 percentage points less
In other findings:
- 54 percent of Democrats think Republicans are ignorant
- 44 percent of Democrats said Republicans are spiteful
- 49 percent of Republicans think Democrats are ignorant
- 54 percent of Republicans think Democrats are spiteful
- 21 percent of Democrats think Republicans are evil
- 23 percent of Republicans think Democrats are evil
In addition:
- 22 percent of Democrats provided open-ended descriptions of Republicans, calling them selfish, greedy, corrupt, spineless, fearful and bad;
- 26 percent of Republicans giving open-ended descriptions called Democrats socialist, angry, hypocritical, uniformed, power-hungry and violent.
There were just a few people polled, around 4 percent, who think the other side is fair, thoughtful, or kind.
The poll was conducted by SurveyMonkey among adults ages 18 and older, and carried a margin of error of 3 points overall; 4 points with Republicans, 6.5 percent with Independents, and 3.5 among Democrats.
