Prominent House Democrats are asking state election officials to turn over all cases of voter fraud in an attempt to end President Donald Trump's claims that millions voted illegally in 2016, The Hill reported.
Reps. Elijah Cummings, Robert Brady, and James Clyburn have sent letters to chief election officials in every state and the District of Columbia. The letters ask for the names, locations and dates for any person who illegally cast a ballot in the presidential race.
"President Trump wants a major investigation of voter fraud — well now he has one," Cummings said. "He continues to be obsessed with false numbers and statistics, but these are not 'alternative facts,' and there is no evidence to support these claims."
"What is a fact is that Republicans in statehouses across America have passed restrictive laws that impair the ability of legitimate voters to participate, and they use the myth of voter fraud to justify their abuses."
The website described the letter as a "tongue-in-cheek response" to Trump's claims of voter fraud by millions of "illegals."
Trump has called for a "major" investigation into voter fraud — despite no evidence that any took place on a massive scale, according to The Hill.
Politico reported House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) said she "felt sorry" for Trump after his calls for an investigation.
"For a person who is newly elected president of the United States to be so insecure . . . to suggest and to undermine the integrity of our voting system, is really strange," she said.
