Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., made public the closed-door congressional testimony of Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson on Tuesday, and reactions are mixed.
Soon after Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the transcript, committee chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, blasted the move.
"Her action undermines the integrity of the committee's oversight work and jeopardizes its ability to secure candid voluntary testimony relating to the independent recollections of future witnesses," Grassley spokesman Taylor Foy told The Hill.
Fusion GPS defended Feinstein's decision to release Simpson's testimony.
"Fusion GPS commends Senator Feinstein for her courage," the company said in a statement. "The transcript of Glenn Simpson's lengthy responses to the Senate Judiciary Committee's questioning speaks for itself."
Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn said this regarding the transcript's release, according to the Washington Examiner: "I think that's a good idea. I'm glad it was done."
Fusion GPS put together a dossier about then-presidential candidate Donald Trump with the help of former British spy Christopher Steele. The document, which was first published in full early last year, claimed Russia had enough dirt on Trump to blackmail him. It also made scandalous claims about Trump and his prior visits to Russia when he was a businessman.
None of the claims have been verified, but some have accused the FBI of using the dossier to obtain FISA warrants that allowed it to spy on members of the Trump campaign.
Among the newsworthy bits in Simpson's testimony were that the FBI had a source inside the Trump Organization who was providing the bureau with information. It was also revealed that the dossier has resulted in at least one death.
