Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin said Wednesday he's got many questions about former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe's comments, but at the same time, he wonders if Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham really wants to open an investigation in the matter.

"The Senate Judiciary Committee has been on the sidelines of the controversy," the Illinois Democrat and committee member told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "This used to be the premiere committee that led the investigations on the most controversial issues of the day. The last several years we've been AWOL."

Durbin said there will be other questions that will need to be opened, including on claim McCabe had briefed the leadership "Gang of Eight" on the pending Trump investigation.

When asked if he found it a shock that leaders such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, then-House Speaker Paul Ryan and others were informed, but made no reaction, Durbin said it would be "rare" to have the kind of confrontation described.

"I haven't been a member of the Gang of Eight but I've been in some briefings in my capacity of the Appropriations Committee," said Durbin. "It is rare if ever you have that kind of confrontation."

He also discussed his doubts about a discussion that has been reported on talks of invoking the 25th Amendment, which is what Graham has said he wants to investigate.

"You think, really, Mike Pence will start this process? And get a majority of the Trump cabinet to sign on?" said Durbin. "I didn't know how serious that was. It seemed like a reach way beyond protocol."
