A Centers for Disease Control summit scheduled for February that would have examined climate change as it relates to health issues was canceled shortly before President Donald Trump's inauguration.
According to The Huffington Post, the Climate & Health Summit was scheduled for Feb. 14-16 in Atlanta and was planned several months ago.
One anonymous employee at the nonprofit National Indian Health Board, the CDC partner hosting the event, told the Post the cancelation came in "the first or second week of January."
The employee added the conference might be merged with a similar event planned for November.
Trump is a vocal critic of whether human activity affects climate change, has vowed to take another look at America's commitment to the Paris climate change agreement.
He did, however, meet with climate change advocate and actor Leonardo DiCaprio in December, who said Trump will do the right thing on the issue — although it was unclear what that exactly meant, since Trump has expressed skepticism about global warming and climate change in the past.
It is unclear whether the CDC's climate change event was canceled because of Trump's direct or indirect influence.
"Sometimes the agency is subject to external political pressure; sometimes the agency self-censors or preemptively stays away from certain issues," former CDC official Howard Frumkin told E&E News, according to the Post. "Climate change has been that issue historically."
