Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Department of Justice has ordered the FBI to investigate the sexual misconduct allegations surrounding Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

According to The Daily Mail, the FBI will open a probe into what Weinstein may have done to several women over the years. Weinstein was fired from the production company he founded and that bears his name last weekend after news reports surfaced that he had sexually harassed several women.

Subsequent reports suggest he may have even committed rape.

TMZ reported Tuesday that Weinstein planned to fly to Europe to begin sex therapy treatment in an unknown country. If he were to stay in Europe and take refuge there, and criminal charges were eventually brought against him in the U.S., he might be able to avoid prosecution by staying put because some European countries do not conduct extraditions to the U.S.

Roman Polanski did just that after he was convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl in 1977. A French citizen who is now 84, Polanski has lived in Europe ever since, despite an active extradition request on him.

The DOJ's decision to investigate Weinstein may be slightly political, since Weinstein has donated to countless Democrats over the years — including Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign.
