President Donald Trump earned $40.4 million in 2017 from his company’s hotel in Washington, D.C., according to his latest financial disclosure statements.
USA Today reported the details of the president’s financial disclosure.
The Trump International Hotel is less than a mile from the White House. The hotel opened in October 2016 and has emerged as a favorite of Washington’s power players, the newspaper noted. A previous financial disclosure from Trump covering January 2016 to mid-April 2017 indicated Trump has earned $19.7 million from the hotel during that period.
The hotel’s revenue during 2017 included more than $350,000 in campaign funds, the newspaper reported, the newspaper said. About 60 percent of that came from events by the Republican National Committee.
Earlier this month, an attorney for Trump asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit that argues that the president’s acceptance of payments from foreign and state governments at the hotel violates the Constitution.
The lawyer, William Consovoy, claimed that the suit should be tossed because the president cannot be sued in the matter either as an individual or in his official capacity.
The Constitution's "emoluments" clause prohibits a president and other government employees from accepting gifts and payments from foreign or state governments without congressional approval.
In this case, the payments come from foreign governments that have patronized the hotel.
