Donald Trump's physician said Friday that he typed a letter on the Republican candidate's health in only five minutes while a limousine sent by the developer waited outside his office in New York City.

"His health is excellent, especially his mental health," Dr. Harold Bornstein, who has been the Republican's physician for 35 years, told NBC News in an interview in his office on Park Avenue in Manhattan.

"I don't think he's in any better or worse than the average person that goes and exercises every single day," he said of Trump, who is 70. "Doesn't smoke, doesn't drink — and that's simply the best advantage you can have to live — and he's got a good family history."

Bornstein, who is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, added that he stood by his resounding assessment of Trump's physical state that was released in December.

He said that after Trump asked him to write the letter, he had thought about what he was going to say throughout the day but did not type the document until the last minute as the car waited to retrieve it and take it back to the nominee.

Bornstein told NBC that he did not proofread the letter.

"I think I picked up his kind of language and then just interpreted it to my own," he said.

The letter, dated last Dec. 4, said that Trump had no "significant medical problems" in his history and that a recent examination "showed only positive results.

"If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency," Bornstein wrote.

He told NBC that he normally would not use such glowing terms but that he made an exception for Trump.

"I like that sentence to be quite honest with you — and all the rest of them are either sick or dead," Bornstein said, referring to previous occupants of the Oval Office.
