Group of House Dems Launch Impeachment Push Against Trump

Four House Democrats introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump on Wednesday, insisting that there is enough evidence to do so, the Washington Examiner reported.

The five articles accuse Trump of obstruction of justice, undermining the independence of the federal judiciary, and other offenses.

Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen led the initiative and was joined at a press conference in the Capitol by three other party colleagues in the House: Reps. Al Green of Texas, Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, and Adriano Espaillat of New York.

Reps. Marcia Fudge of Ohio and John Yarmuth of Kentucky also plan to sign on.

Rep. Cohen tweeted:

The congressmen made the move despite opposition from the Democratic leadership and the fact it has almost no chance of passing in the Republican-controlled House, CBC News reported.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has said pursuing impeachment should not be the priority of the Democrats, telling CNN's "State of the Union" recently that the party's responsibility should be to unify the nation.

Pelosi also stressed that such a serious act should not be taken without the facts and the law, saying that investigations into the Trump campaign's involvement in Russian meddling in the U.S. elections should be allowed to take their course.

Cohen said a great many Democrats, as well as some Republicans, think there have been impeachable offenses. Cohen and Gutierrez are both members on the House Judiciary Committee, which is involved in its own efforts behind the scenes, according to the Examiner.

Democrats on the committee are considering what options they may have to impeach the president if the party retakes the House in midterm elections next year or if the probes into Russian meddling reveal a smoking gun against Trump.

A Republican National Committee spokesman strongly slammed the move, telling Newsweek that, "House Democrats lack a positive message and are completely unwilling to work across the aisle, so instead they've decided to support a baseless radical effort that the vast majority of Americans disagree with. Republicans are focused on issues the middle class actually cares about, like cutting taxes and growing the economy."
