A new poll shows former President Donald Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris by 1 point in the battleground state of North Carolina. The poll, conducted by East Carolina University Center for Survey Research, shows Trump leading the former California senator 48% to 47%.

Among independents, the poll found Harris ahead of Trump by 10 percentage points, leading 47% to 37%.

As far as issues driving votes, the economy is on top, with 30% saying inflation and the high cost of living are what they're most concerned about. Another 22% cited the economy in general, while 14% picked abortion.

When it comes to vice presidential picks, 44% of Trump supporters said the selection of Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio made them more likely to vote for Trump, 1% said it made them less likely, and 52% said it had no impact on their vote.

On the Democrats' side, 68% of Harris supporters said the selection of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate made them more likely to vote for her, less than 1% said it made them less likely, and 31% said it had no impact.

Finally, 38% said they have "a lot of confidence" that the 2024 election results will be legitimate, while another 40% say they have "some confidence." Nineteen percent said they had "no confidence" election results will be accurate.

Democrats were more likely to have faith in the vote count, with 67% of them saying they have "a lot of confidence" versus just 9% of Republicans. Nearly a third (32%) of Republicans reported "no confidence" in the upcoming election results compared to 1% of Democrats.

The survey was conducted Aug. 26 to 28 among 920 registered North Carolina voters and has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
