President Donald Trump has given up on two of his nominees for the federal bench, Politico reported.
An unnamed White House official told the outlet Trump won't pursue the nomination of Brett Talley to a district court slot in Alabama, and of Jeff Mateer to a district court spot in Texas.
Talley had come under fire for his lack of experience and for failing to disclose that his wife works in the White House counsel's office, and offered to withdraw. The White House official told Politico, the nomination "will not be moving forward."
The officials added that Mateer's nomination also "will not be moving forward." Mateer was criticized for calling transgender children part of "Satan's plan."
According to Politico, the White House could drop both men's nominations without formally withdrawing them; unapproved nominations are typically returned to the president at the end of each session of Congress. Politico noted that Trump could wait for that and not resubmit the nominations next year.
