Sen. Doug Jones said Monday he finds Republicans' responses to his former challenger Roy Moore "comical" and he's not worried about news that Moore may mount another challenge for his Senate seat.
“There will be a lot of people that run for that, and what’s really comical to me is to watch the reaction of the Republicans who all supported him a couple years ago, and now they’re talking about he’s a flawed candidate, yada yada yada,” the Alabama Democrat told CNN's "New Day." "I just think it’s kind of comical to watch these days, but we’ll be ready for whoever the nominee is next spring.”
Jones defeated Republican Moore by a narrow margin in December 2017 to fill the seat vacated by Jeff Sessions when he left to become attorney general. His race was marred by claims that he had either sexually assaulted or pursued teenage girls when he as in his 30s, but he said last week he's "seriously considering" another run as he thinks his 2017 race was "stolen."
Meanwhile, Jones said he hopes President Donald Trump submits his new budget request for $8 billion in border wall funding, as that will allow for hearings to make the issues public.
"We haven't seen what he really wants," said Jones. "Let the experts talk about it in a hearing...every time I talk to people about a border wall, they really want border security. They want better border security. If we can do hearings and get the experts in, I think we can come up with whatever is necessary to secure that border."
