The United States and South Korea are set to resume military drills on Monday, a few days before Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to meet with North Korea's No. 2 official Kim Yong-chol to discuss denuclearization and plans for a second summit,
Reuters reported on Sunday.
The Korean Marine Exchange Program, relatively small-scale maneuvers in which some 500 American and South Korean troops participate, was among the training drills that President Donald Trump indefinitely suspended in June after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.
Pyongyang has always considered the joint drills to be provocative.
In Washington last week, South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo said a decision would be made together with the U.S. by December on major joint military exercises for next year.
Pyongyang warned on Friday that it could restart development of its nuclear program if the United States does not halt its policy of “maximum pressure” and sanctions.
CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday that said he would be in New York City at the end of this week to meet with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong-chol.
“I expect we’ll make some real progress, including an effort to make sure that the summit between our two leaders can take place, where we can make substantial steps towards denuclearization,” Pompeo said.
