It would not be a good idea for former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to mount another run for the presidency, Sen. Dick Durbin said Tuesday.
"I believe we need to move beyond the last campaign," the Illinois Democrat and Senate Minority Whip told MSNBC's "Morning Joe," while discussing potential 2020 candidates.
"I haven't heard any serious suggestions from her side that she's looking at it again. I hope she doesn't get engaged in another effort."
However, Durbin deferred when asked if former Vice President Joe Biden should jump into the growing pool of Democratic candidates.
"He has to make that decision based on a personal basis and politically," said Durbin. "He's widely respected. He was called in by campaign after campaign in the last cycle. He has a great deal of experience. This is a very personal decision. I think that's what it will come down to."
Also on Tuesday, Durbin said he is not optimistic that Republicans will overturn a presidential veto if Trump rejects a funding bill that does not include funding for a border wall.
“I want to tell you, the president is also dangling this possibility of executive action,” he said. “I’m not sure what that looks like and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea under the Constitution to give the president that much authority, but he’s left that out there as a possibility if his own party is not supporting another shutdown.”
