Russia has asked the United States government to throw out a lawsuit filed by the Democratic National Committee that accuses Russia of conspiring to influence the 2016 presidential election.

According to The Washington Post, Russia's Ministry of Justice sent a letter to the Department of State and a judge in the Southern District of New York and claimed it is exempt from the DNC lawsuit and others like it via the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act.

The DNC sued Russia, WikiLeaks, the Trump campaign, and several other parties in April over allegations they worked together to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton two years ago. Russia said the lawsuit not only should not be allowed to go forward, but it also could open a can of worms the U.S. government might not want opened.

The Russians claimed letting the lawsuit move forward could expose U.S. spy agencies to "a tidal wave of civil litigation" in overseas courts.

Russia also said the matter is one that should be settled between the White House, Congress, and the Russian government, not in a U.S. courtroom.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is leading a Department of Justice investigation into whether the Trump campaign had an improper relationship with the Russians to defeat Clinton. The probe has resulted in several indictments of Russians, mostly related to interfering in the U.S. election.
