Actress Ellen Page wrote an op-ed about actor Jussie Smollett and hate crimes, but did not apologize for blaming the Trump administration for the incident that police now believe was staged, the Washington Examiner reported on Wednesday.
In an op-ed entitled “Hate Crime is Not a Hoax” appearing in The Hollywood Reporter, Page wrote that “The merits of one case should not and cannot call into question [that hate violence exists].”
Smollett claimed that last month he was attacked by two white men who yelled racist and homophobic slurs and expressed support for President Donald Trump, according to the Examiner. But Chicago police have determined that Smollett staged a hoax attack and paid two black men to carry it out.
Before the story was determined to be a hoax, Page appeared on “The Late Show” and gave an impassioned plea in which she said people should "connect the dots" between the Trump administration, especially Vice President Mike Pence, and the alleged attack on Smollett.
In her op-ed, Page stressed that “the reality and totality of the cruelty and danger we face… is the story that must be told.”
She vowed to continue speaking out to combat intolerance, because 'no one deserves to be victimized because of who they are."
