Russian pop star Emin Agalarov, who reportedly helped arrange Donald Trump Jr.'s controversial meeting with a Kremlin-linked lawyer at Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign, canceled his tour of the United States out of fear of being held under a material witness warrant, NBC News reported Monday.
Agalarov is seen as a figure in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian election interference.
Agalarov's lawyer Scott Balber told NBC the cancellation is "most definitely" linked to the Russia probe.
"He could come and do the concert, but we don't want him to be subpoenaed or held under a material witness warrant or anything else," Balber said.
The lawyer added his client was "happy" to speak to Mueller's team and congressional committees voluntarily, but an agreement on the "parameters" of that testimony had not yet been reached in discussions among the parties involved.
Agalarov, who is the son of oligarch Aras Agalarov, is not subject to US jurisdiction because he is a Russian citizen, CNN reported.
However, if he agreed to accept a subpoena, the singer could open himself up to, for example, obstruction of justice charges if he failed to fully respond to document and records requests.
Congressional investigators are also interested in a potential deal that was being negotiated before Trump was president between the Agalarovs and Trump for building a Trump Tower in Moscow.
