Cantor: West Point Speech Proves Obama 'Doesn't Want to Lead'

By    |   Wednesday, 28 May 2014 06:50 PM EDT

President Barack Obama gave a disappointing speech before graduates of the U.S. Military Academy on Wednesday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor says.

In the speech, Obama said it was time for the United States to show restraint after a "long season of war" in the Middle East.

"The president . . . doesn't want to lead over here, he doesn't want to lead over there," Cantor, a Virginia Republican, said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto."

When Obama talked about Asia, he mentioned climate change but not "the maniacal, tyrannical dictator in North Korea who has a nuclear bomb," Cantor said. Obama's discussion of the Middle East didn't mention the security of Israel, Cantor added.

"America does need to lead. We've got global interests," Cantor said, adding that it is a false choice to say "war or nothing."

America's allies want to see us engaged in the world, he said, but they don't expect us to carry the burden alone. They want to see "an America that leads from the front, not behind," Cantor said, a reference to a phrase that has dogged the Obama White House since an unidentified Obama adviser used it in 2011.
