Obama administration Attorney General Eric Holder would not rule out a run for the presidency against President Donald Trump in 2020 in an effort to "unify the country."

"If I were going to do it, I would do it because I would think I would have concluded that I could maybe unify the country, because it's bigger than any one person," Holder told The New York Times reporter Alex Burns in an interview broadcast online Wednesday.

"That I could repair and then advance the nation in a variety of contexts. That I had something to contribute. That would be, I think that would push me toward considering the run."

Holder did admit he is unsure he would want to subject himself and his family to political negativity.

"On the negative side, I've been in public life a fair amount of years," Holder said. "I remember unpleasant hearings with some congressman who are now leaving. And you know, to subject myself and my family to that could be a negative."

Newsmax's John Gizzi reported in early February that Holder has been dropping hints at a potential 2020 presidential campaign.
