FBI Director James Comey said Wednesday he would look into claims former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani were privy to sensitive information during the 2016 election, Talking Points Memo reports.
"Now either they're lying or there is a serious problem within the bureau," Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy asked Comey during a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing. "Did anybody in the FBI during this 2016 campaign have contact with Rudy Giuliani about the Clinton investigation?"
"I don't know yet, but if I find out that people were leaking information about our investigations whether to reporters or private parties, there will be severe consequences," Comey replied, later adding that he was "very, very interested" in the matter.
"But are you looking into it?" Leahy asked.
"Correct," Comey replied.
Giuliani, an ally of President Donald Trump's, during the election bragged that former agents told him in advance of new emails being probed by the FBI shortly before Election Day.
"Did I hear about it? You're darn right I heard about it," Giuliani, told Fox News.
