President Donald Trump has reportedly damaged morale among some agents at the FBI because of his criticism of the agency, The Hill reported Friday.
Earlier this month, Trump tweeted the FBI's "reputation is in tatters — worst in history!" And the agency's new director, Christopher Wray, is reported to be feeling pressure to remove employees who might be considered loyal to former FBI Director James Comey, who Trump fired in May.
Deputy Director James McCabe could also be on the list of people of people Wray could eye in an effort to clean house of employees whose loyalty to the Trump administration might be questioned.
And, two FBI employees, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, who were working on the federal investigation into claims of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, were alleged to have exchanged texts that were anti-Trump in nature.
White House press secretary Raj Shah said the actions of some FBI officials had called into question whether or not the agency was impartial. He also maintained Trump had "enormous respect for the thousands of rank-and-file FBI agents who make up the world's most professional and talented law enforcement agency."
Shah also said that Wray, who Trump picked to head the FBI following Comey's departure, was "the right choice to clean up the misconduct at the highest levels of the FBI and give the rank-and-file confidence in their leadership."
Reports suggest the House Judiciary Committee is preparing subpoenas for Strzok and Page, as well as McCabe and Justice Department official Bruce Ohr.
