The FBI is conducting toxicology tests on samples taken from at least one minibar at a Dominican Republic hotel following the unexplained deaths of nine Americans tourists on the Caribbean island over the past 13 months, CNN reports.
The samples were taken from the Bahia Principe Hotel.
Additionally, the State Department said it was closely monitoring ongoing investigations by Dominican authorities.
"The FBI is providing technical assistance to Dominican authorities with toxicology reports for three recent deaths at the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana resort," the agency said in a statement to Fox News. "Our FBI colleagues tell us that those results may take up to 30 days. For all other questions regarding investigations into recent deaths (and attacks) of U.S. citizens, we refer you to local authorities in the Dominican Republic."
New Jersey resident Joseph Allen, 55, was the latest American tourist to die in a hotel in the Dominican Republic when he was found dead last week in his hotel room in the city of Sousa.
Allen's friends told the family he complained about not feeling well before he died.
Several of the U.S. tourists who died reportedly had a beverage from the room minibar before they became ill.
