The FBI is reportedly investigating one of its own Twitter accounts after a massive document dump, including one that flatteringly describes Donald Trump's father as a "philanthropist" and another dealing with former President Bill Clinton's controversial pardon of Marc Rich.
The FBI Records Vault account had been dormant for more than a year when in the predawn hours of Oct. 30, the flood of documents began pouring out on the social media platform, ThinkProgress reported.
It was two days later that the account started getting attention over tweeted documents regarding Clinton's 2001 pardon of Rich.
Despite the heavy redactions, one line appears to call the validity of the pardon into question: "It appears that the required pardon standards and procedures were not followed," internal FBI memos said.
Rich was charged with evading taxes in the '80s, but received a pardon from Clinton on his last day in office. Some were upset, accusing Clinton of giving Rich leniency due to politics, but an FBI investigation partially led by current director, James Comey, did not result in any charges.
The account has been silent since then.
Candice Will, assistant director for the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility, told the outlet the findings of the probe by the FBI's Inspection Division will be referred back to the the Office of Professional Responsibility for "adjudication."
But ThinkProgress reported news of an internal investigation is at odds with the FBI's official position that its Twitter account followed all procedures.
"Per the standard procedure for FOIA, these materials became available for release and were posted automatically and electronically to the FBI's public reading room in accordance with the law and established procedures," the FBI said in a statement to Talking Points Memo.
The Twitter dump came just days after Comey released a letter revealing the department was reviewing some emails that could be relevant to the investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server — an explosive announcement that rocked the campaign of Hillary Clinton.
