Florida's recount shows it is not a question about whether the state needs to look at better elections laws, but rather at people breaking the law, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday.
"In Broward County, the registrar [Brenda Snipes] happens to not realize she had brought together a group of already discounted bad ballots and put them in with a group of good ballots," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "Now, she will count all the ballots. At what point do you say to yourself, this is the second time she has done this – 12 different examples where she has broken Florida law."
But Snipes, said Gingrich, is the "very same person in 2000 and now in 2018" who was behind voting scandals, and Gingrich does not understand why some attorneys do not step in and file a lawsuit.
There is presently no proof of fraud, he acknowledged, but that is because "she won't let anybody into look at ballots."
"We can't prove she actually stole them," Gingrich said. "If you went to a bank and had a half a million dollars missing, your first thought isn't 'gee, they're really bad at math.' Somebody is stealing it."
Meanwhile, Democrats are calling for all of the ballots to be counted rather than just legitimate votes, and that is because if just legitimate votes are counted, "Democrats will lose," Gingrich said.
Gingrich also addressed the incoming Democratic majority in the House, saying they run a "real risk" if they are only looking out to destroy President Donald Trump.
"I suspect the average American will think that's pretty stupid," Gingrich said. "They would like the Congress and the president to work on healthcare, to work on the economy, to work on a whole range of issues, other than just getting involved in this negativity."
