Evangelist Franklin Graham said Monday Donald Trump is "shaking up the Republican Party," although he stopped short of endorsing the real estate mogul or anyone else in the GOP field of presidential candidates.
In a Facebook post Monday morning, Graham — the son of evangelist Billy Graham — also offered some advice to the 17 candidates vying for the Republican nomination.
Last week,
Graham told AL.com he spoke with some of the Republican candidates ahead of their debate on Aug. 6, although he would not reveal which ones.
"There were several, a few, candidates, who had expressed their faith in God. That's encouraging," Graham said. "I communicated with a few of them before the debate and told them I was praying for them. I think the Republicans have a strong field. These are strong individuals and capable people. The faith of some of them certainly came out."
When asked if he was planning to endorse someone, Graham hinted that he'll wait until after primary season to do so.
"I don't want to get involved in the primaries," Graham said. "There are going to be a lot more debates. I've been disappointed in politicians, very disappointed in the Democratic Party, very disappointed in the Republican Party. I think Americans across the board are fed up with the shenanigans that go on, politicians who go to Washington to benefit themselves, who promise one thing and deliver another. Americans are ready for a change."
Graham heads two organizations — the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse — and receives, according to a recent
Charlotte Observer report, more than $880,000 per year in salary and benefits.
Graham has made recent headlines for saying he'd like to
end all Muslim immigration to the United States and that he won't be
"forced" to marry same-sex couples.
