President Donald Trump’s suggestion to hold the next G-7 summit at one of his Florida resorts has caused some of his most prominent supporters to say he’s gone too far in promoting his own properties.

At the recent G-7 summit in Biarritz, France, Trump spoke at length about his golf resort in Doral, Florida, touting its “magnificent buildings,” and “luxurious rooms with magnificent room views,” during a press conference.

Former Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Rick Santorum, who was at one point considered for Trump’s White House chief of staff, said in an interview on Tuesday that holding the summit at Trump’s Doral Club would be a “violation of the law,” according to Raw Story.

CNN anchor John Berman asked Santorum what he would say if he were in the White House when someone, including the president, made that suggestion.

“Hell no,” Santorum replied, adding later that Trump “doesn’t do himself any good by doing things like this,” and pleading, “please, Mr. President. Stop. Please.”

He continued, “This is one of the things I scratch my head and wonder why the president doesn’t see the obvious, not just conflict of interest, but how it could be used by opponents to undermine some of the good things that he’s trying to accomplish there, and again, I’m disappointed that he even brought it up and I hope that it’s the last we hear of it.”

The former senator and two-time presidential candidate said later that Trump can’t help being a “promoter,” saying, “that’s what he does. I think that’s just who he is,” though Santorum admitted that “it’s inappropriate. He shouldn’t do it.”
