Only 45% of people surveyed are "extremely" proud to be Americans, according to a new Gallup poll.
This marks the lowest percentage Gallup has recorded since it first asked the question in 2001. It is a slight drop from last year's survey, which recorded 47% were "extremely" proud. The highest mark — 70% — came in 2003.
Overall, the latest poll also showed a total of 70% of those surveyed said they are proud to be Americans.
Here are how the survey results, released Tuesday, break down:
- 76% of Republicans are "extremely" proud to be Americans.
- 22% of Democrats are "extremely" proud.
- 41% of independents are "extremely" proud.
- 32% of all those polled said the American political system makes them proud, compared to 68% who say it does not.
- 91% of those surveyed say American scientific achievements make them proud, while 8% say the breakthroughs do not.
The poll, conducted June 3-16, surveyed 1,015 adults. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
