Most Republicans think voter fraud could be a major problem in this year's election, a new Gallup poll says.

When asked if they think votes being cast by people not eligible to vote will be a major problem, the following said yes:

  • U.S. adults: 36 percent;
  • Republicans: 52 percent;
  • Independents: 33 percent;
  • Democrats: 26 percent.

When asked if they think eligible voters not being able to vote will be a major problem, the following said yes:

  • U.S. adults: 32 percent;
  • Republicans: 22 percent;
  • Independents: 31 percent;
  • Democrats: 40 percent.

A majority of voters support voter ID laws, Republicans and unaffiliated voters overwhelmingly, while Democrats are more divided:

  • U.S. adults: 80 percent;
  • Republicans: 95 percent;
  • Independents: 83 percent;
  • Democrats: 63 percent.

Support for early voting is less popular among Republicans, but more popular with Democrats:

  • U.S. adults: 80 percent;
  • Republicans: 74 percent;
  • Independents: 80 percent;
  • Democrats: 85 percent.

News21, an investigative journalism collaborative based in Arizona State University, released a nationwide study on Saturday, concluding that "voter fraud is not a persistent problem."

After analyzing over 2,000 alleged election-fraud cases, they found only 10 instances of voter impersonation, "the only kind of fraud that could be prevented by voter ID at the polls."

"Voter fraud is not a significant problem in the country," Jennifer Clark, counsel for the Brennan Center's Democracy Program, told News21. "As the evidence that has come out in some recent court cases and reports and basically every analysis that has ever been done has concluded: It is not a significant concern."

Gallup surveyed 1,013 people across the country from August 15-16, with a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
