Border security agents in Texas are under attack on a daily basis from illegal immigrant gang members as the officials attempt to prevent drugs from being smuggled into the United States.
The traffickers throw rocks at law enforcement officials, fire shots across the Rio Grande, and physically assault them, all the while spewing obscenities and death threats,
Fox News reported.
A representative of a local border patrol union is calling for more agents to battle the increasing threat from violent undocumented criminals.
The Border Operations Sector Assessment report, drawn up by the Texas Department of Public Safety's Border Security Operations Center, shows that local and federal agents are seizing drug gang members loaded down with cash and carrying millions of dollars in marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine.
The report, dated July 25 and obtained by FoxNews.com, says that contraband is often found in vehicles filled with biblical passages and religious items, and that ranch workers witness men illegally crossing the border wearing camouflage and carrying long guns and automatic weapons.
The attacks on border agents has become a growing concern for the National Border Patrol Union in the region.
"In recent weeks the traffic appears to have slowed slightly, yet assaults on law enforcement have increased," Chris Cabrera, vice president of the union's Rio Grande Valley Sector, told FoxNews.com. "This is a disturbing trend that needs to be addressed. It is evident that we need more agents in the field."
The 83-page report says that officials impounded $478,879 in U.S. currency and seven tons of marijuana with a street value of $6.35 million, while also seizing $1 million worth of cocaine and methamphetamine.
The detailed review also says that the surge of illegal immigrants includes people from other countries, apart from Mexico and Central American nations, Fox News said.
More than 6,000 aliens were captured between July 16 to 23, with most coming from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. But there also were illegals from Russia, Morocco, China, Cuba and India, among other nations.
Border Patrol agents recently came under fire near Mission, Texas, from rounds of .50 caliber gunfire shot from the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, and had to run for cover.
"This happens all the time; we're out on the border, often we are alone, and all you hear is gunfire," a Border Patrol agent told Fox News. "We are sitting ducks, and it's only getting worse. Every night, it gets worse."
Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens are also facing increasing attacks while detaining illegal immigrants and gang members, with one agent recently being hit in the head with a rock.
The Austin-based Border Security Operations Center is the main hub of the six Joint Operations and Intelligence Centers situated along the south Texas border, Fox News said.
