Libertarian Gary Johnson came well ahead of his Republican opponent in the Senate race in New Mexico in a new poll from Emerson College.
Republican Mick Rich won only 11 percent of the poll, released on Monday, while Johnson, the former governor, came in at 21 percent. Democratic incumbent Sen. Martin Heinrich nearly doubled Johnson’s result with 39 percent.
“What a crazy, wacky world we live in,” Rich said last week in an interview with the Santa Fe New Mexican just after Johnson announced his candidacy.
Rich added that the libertarian is “more in sync with [Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders] than he is with Republicans.”
Emerson polled 500 registered voters from August 17-18, with a margin of error of +/- 4.6 percentage points.
