Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., demanded Thursday that Vice President Mike Pence provide more information on his stay this week at one of President Donald Trump's properties in Ireland.

"I write with concern that, at President Trump's 'suggestion,' you decided to stay at the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in the village of Doonbeg during your official visit to Ireland," Peters, the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, wrote in the letter.

"This raises serious concerns about wasteful expenditures and possible conflicts of interest related to taxpayer-funded travel by this administration," Peters said.

He added that the vice president's trip "creates the risk that taxpayer funds are being used to directly profit the president."

Pence stayed Monday at the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg, then traveled 182 miles for his meetings Tuesday in Dublin.

The move created a firestorm, fueled by shifting explanations from the White House and Pence's staff.

A top Pence aide said initially that President Trump made the suggestion, though Pence's office later said that the vice president made the decision on his own.

But the vice president told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Trump property was a "logical" choice because the hotel could "accommodate the unique footprint that comes with our security detail and other personnel."

On Wednesday, President Trump told reporters that he made no such suggestion to Pence.

In his letter, Peters asked the vice president to detail the total cost of his trip, including the specific amount spent at the Trump property for him and his family, and disclose whether any analysis had been done to compare costs in Doonbeg versus Dublin.

Peters requested the data by Oct. 1.
