Bill Gates Is Still the Richest Person in the World

With $75 billion, Gates has topped Forbes' list of billionaires for the third year in a row. The Microsoft co-founder's net worth is down from $79.2 billion, but still at the peak of the magazine's 30th annual ranking. Gates has made the list for 17 of the last 22 years.

As a whole, 1,810 billionaires are on the list, which is down 16 people from last year. The average net worth of the billionaires on the list is $3.58 billion, having dropped $280 million from $3.86 billion in 2015. The total net worth for this year's billionaires was $6.48 trillion.

The list added 198 billionaires this year, which again was down from last year, when 290 individuals were added. China had the most with 70 newcomers, and there were 33 from the U.S., 28 from Germany and eight from India.

Behind Gates is Amancio Ortega, known for his Zara fashion chain, at $67 billion; Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett at $60.8 billion; Telecom's Carlos Slim Helu at $50 billion; Jeff Bezos netted $45.2 billion thanks to Amazon; Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg saw the greatest growth on the list, landing in sixth with $44.6 billion; Oracle's Larry Ellison pulled in $43.6; Michael Bloomberg came in at eight with $40 billion; and Koch brothers Charles and David tied for ninth with $39.6 billion.
