George Washington University is not giving into cancel-culture cries, keeping Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on the payroll after protesters "expressed feelings of deep disagreement" with Thomas' opinions.
The university even stood up for freedom of speech in a statement, according to Politico.
"Debate is an essential part of our university's academic and educational mission," an email to "the George Washington University Community" read.
"Since the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, we have heard from members of our community who have expressed feelings of deep disagreement with this decision," the email from the George Washington University Provost and Law School Dean read.
"We also have received requests from some members of the university and external communities that the university terminate its employment of Adjunct Professor and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and cancel the Constitutional Law Seminar that he teaches at the Law School."
The school has rejected calls to cancel Thomas.
"Because we steadfastly support the robust exchange of ideas and deliberation, and because debate is an essential part of our university's academic and educational mission to train future leaders who are prepared to address the world's most urgent problems, the university will neither terminate Justice Thomas' employment nor cancel his class in response to his legal opinions," the email vowed.
Calls to fire Thomas have been brought up after he was one of five conservative justices to sign onto the majority opinion to overrule Roe v. Wade abortion precedent and kick the issue of abortion law constitutionally back to state legislatures.
Thomas also reportedly added remarks to "reconsider" other positions that were unpopular with progressives.
"Just as we affirm our commitment to academic freedom, we affirm the right of all members of our communities to voice their opinions," the statement concluded.
